What is the process of hiring a freelance writer?

The first thing you need to take into consideration is that the world is full of freelance writers. This of course doesn't mean that they are all the same. In fact quite the opposite. There many freelance writers who are intelligent, experienced and produce high-quality work. There are some who are desperate for money and pass themselves off as a freelance writer when in fact their ability does not pass muster.

So straight away you need to understand that hiring any freelance writer is not necessarily going to be a solution to your problem. In fact hiring the wrong freelance writer can cause all sorts of problems.

Quality writers can still be the wrong choice

Just because a person is an experienced writer and has the qualifications and a track record to prove their status, doesn't mean they are the ideal freelance writer for you. Here you need to understand that every freelance writing job is unique. There is a big difference between writing a sales letter, a blog, an article and a highly technical e-book. Sure, the same writer could produce all of those things but in some cases quality writers do not cover every aspect of writing.

The first step you need to take is to be absolutely certain as to what you require the freelance writer to do. Many freelance writing jobs turn sour because the employer failed to clearly explain what was required. Mind you, many freelance writing jobs turn sour because the freelancer claims they have ability in a certain field which is not true. But as the person looking for a freelance writer, you need to be absolutely certain as to what skills you require.

You then need to find an appropriate freelance writer and arguably the best way to do that is to join a writing agency. There are many of these types of business. In short they act as a go-between. They allow people who want a freelance writer to place an advertisement on their webpage and they facilitate freelance writers applying for each particular job.

The best writers work with the best agencies

It is possible to find a freelance writer who will do a job for a very low rate of pay. As an employer, this type of deal may very well seem attractive. But usually the old adage is true in that ‘you get what you pay for’. If you are prepared to pay peanuts, you may very well get work which has been written by a monkey.

If you want a high quality of work, you will need to pay a reasonable fee.

So once you are absolutely certain as to the requirements of your job and have placed the details of that job with a reputable freelancer agency, you then need to sift through the applications and choose the writer who you believe will do the best job for you at a reasonable price.
