Working On A Resume For A Freelance Writer

If you are a freelance writer, you know that you have to impress client after client to stay working. If you be fortunate enough to find a client that has continuous work and you can support their needs on a consistent basis, than you are in good shape. However, you never really know when you have written your last paper for that client or when the jobs will start to dry up. Because of this, you want to make sure that you have a strong resume on file so that other clients can frequently view it. You have to appeal to many clients on a consistent basis in order to be successful. You have to have jobs to do in order to make money so you should update your resume fairly frequently.

The main reason for having a resume is to showcase your talents. You want to display the skills that you possess so that your clients have an idea of who you are as a freelancer. You only get a few minutes to impress the potential client, so make sure that you have a strong resume to get the job over the other freelancers. Here are some things to think about when writing your resume.

  1. Be specific
  2. It is important that you are specific when writing your resume. You want to let your potential clients know the jobs that you have accomplished. Generalizations are not helpful. When you only list general things that you have completed, you really aren’t telling your prospective client anything. You want to let them know the specific things that you have accomplished.

  3. Market yourself
  4. This is your chance to market yourself. It is your chance to let your prospective client know who you are. They don’t have a lot of time to interview every prospective freelance writer. So, you have to market yourself and let them know why you are the best for the job. Get them drawn in and wanting to work with you.

  5. Keywords
  6. Some companies will use an automated database to store their resumes. If there is an opening, a keyword is searched for within all of the resumes in the database and the ones with these keywords are pulled out. The more keywords that you have in your resume, the better chance you will have to get hired.

  7. Get to the point
  8. Make sure to include bullet points to present your information. It will set different points a part from each other. You will also make it easier for your client to skim through. If the resume is very busy, it will be harder for the client to pull out the information that he needs for his job. Paragraphs or parts of your resume that look like a paragraph, will not get read.

  9. Quantify your accomplishments
  10. You want to not only list an accomplishment but also try to quantify it as well. That gives your client an idea of what the accomplishments mean. If you were in the top ten students in your English class, tell your client out of how many students. Add a line that states out of one hundred students. This just helps them put it in perspective. You can be in the top ten of a class of eleven which is actually not good at all.

These tips should help you enhance your resume so that you set yourself apart from the other freelance writers that are bidding on the same project. You may not be able to win the bid from other freelancers without a strong resume.
