What Is Required To Be A Freelance Writer: Tips For Beginners

We’ve all thought about leaving the daily grind behind and going into business for ourselves, but what about going into the freelance writing business? It may surprise you how easy and lucrative it can be, so here are some tips on how to make that work-in-your-pajamas dream happen.

  1. Make sure you can write:
  2. While this advice may seem obvious, unfortunately, not everyone is up to the task. While today’s writers aren’t as bound to exact grammar and perfect English as they once were, they still must know how to form a great sentence and how to structure things so that it makes sense to the reader.

  3. Create a portfolio with great samples:
  4. A portfolio usually includes your bio, contact info and samples with links to published articles. This will be on some sort of social media network or individual website.

If you’re just starting out and think you can’t get any work without experience, you will have to make your experience in order to have something to show your potential employers. A few ways to do this include:

    1. Start a blog and publish content there
    2. Let your friends have you guest on their blogs
    3. Find someone who will let you contribute to their blog and say you’ll work for free, or for minimal compensation.
  5. Tell everyone how great you are!:
  6. Your portfolio or website should include testimonials about your writing talent and perhaps how pleasant it is to work with you. These are essentially your references, and you’ll want to start building them up as fast as you can. Don’t let the lack of these stop you from starting out though, just move forward with an eye towards getting some.

  7. Find a website that offers payment protection and wealth of jobs to choose from:
  8. There are tons of platforms out there designed for the freelancer to strut his or her stuff that offer protection from shady businesses and a good structure for you to flex your newfound freelancer muscles.

  9. Learn to write fast:
  10. This is key to a great writing career. Time = money and the more you can write in a short time the more money you make.

  11. Learn how to focus topics and trim the fat:
  12. Whoever is hiring you will most likely need things to short and to the point, so learn how to write this way and it will be very helpful.

With these tips, you won’t become a millionaire overnight, but hopefully you’ll be well on your way to a new career and a break from the drudgery of the workaday world.
