Working for a Magazine: Guidelines for Freelance Writers

Working for magazines is a great way to build your freelance writing career. This will give your name some recognition and increase your income. Although the prices offered by different publications vary, they are never low. This means that you will be able to make a living from these articles if you manage to get them published.

However, it is easier said than done. Hundreds of people submit their pieces to various magazines, but only a few of them get published. If you want to increase your chances of success, you will need to make sure that your article is written in accordance with all the guidelines set by the publication. Bear in mind that every magazine has its own unique set of requirements. You will need to study it in great detail to make sure that your article meets them perfectly.

The general guidelines that the vast majority of the publications use are:

  • Adjust your style so the article will fit into the magazine.
  • Some publications are very lenient with their style policy, and their only requirement is for it to be interesting and original. However, specialized magazines have certain standards that you can learn by studying the articles in older issues.

  • Make the piece interesting.
  • This is an essential requirement. A boring article filled with nothing but statistics and terms will never be published. Your writing should be lively and engaging to make sure readers don’t skip it after skimming through the first couple of sentences.

  • Avoid any racial, ethnic, gender, or social discrimination issues.
  • Even if discrimination is the topic of your article, you should write it in a way that will not raise any negative reaction from the groups of people mentioned in it.

  • Do not preach or encourage violence in any form.
  • The article you write mustn’t encourage people do something illegal or violent. It also shouldn’t preach a certain subject to the readers. The overall tone of the piece should always be light and engaging, or even neutral for some subjects.

  • Provide evidence.
  • If the article includes any statistical data and other facts that must be accurate, you will need to enclose copies of the documents or links to the sources that provide necessary evidence.

  • Set a good example.
  • The articles that include some characters should revolve around personalities that set a good example to all readers.

  • Be age appropriate.
  • Every piece you write should be aimed towards a certain age group. However, it must be written in a way that will not make it seem too childish or overly complex for readers from different groups.
