Writer’s Needed: How To Obtain The Best Online Writing Job


You may have heard about people who write online for a living. You may have even though that you may enjoy doing that. However, the trick to become an online writer is landing jobs. Today, we are going to discuss how to do this for aspiring online freelancers and the 3 important things that you’ll need.

  1. Resume
  2. Before you can begin to apply for online jobs there are a few things you will need to do. Writing a “writers” resume is one of them.

    When you compose your writer work specific resume you should include your academic level, any languages that you speak and write fluently as well as any other points that qualify you to write online.

    Even if you don’t have any previous experience, you can still write a resume. It is useful if you have some form of post-secondary education.

  3. Your Portfolio
  4. Along with your resume you will also need a writer portfolio. This is a collection of your best writing samples for potential employers to review.

    Once again, you can put together a writing portfolio without any previous writing experience. If you have any person writing or class assignments that demonstrate your talent you can include these. If you are looking for specific types of online jobs you may want to write samples for these. (SEO, Geo-target, Marketing Copy etc.)

  5. A Cover Letter and A Pitch
  6. Last but certainly not least is your cover letter or pitch to the employer. This should go along with your resume and your portfolio. It should explain who you are and how you will approach the job if you are hired. It is a good idea to try to set yourself part from other applications by showing your personality and writing style in the cover letter/pitch.

    The truth is when you first apply for writing jobs you likely will experience plenty of rejection. Many people do not want to hire in-experienced writers, so it is kind of a catch-22. However, don’t lose faith. Once you land your first job you will likely begin to find more. Persistence is important. Don’t stop applying, and keep working on your writing skills.

* It is also a good idea to carefully proofread and edit your cover letter, portfolio and resume. Many employers will look at these as an example of your work. If you applications are sloppy they will assume that your work will be low quality. Take the time to really refine these three components.
